Depth, immersion, and getting to the core of things—these are the qualities that resonate in the music of Dybfølt (formerly LuLo), a Danish duo that has crafted a truly distinctive sound built on the two deepest voices in the string family: the cello and the double bass.
Founders Kirstine Elise Pedersen and Mathæus Bech share not only their instruments’ lower registers but also a kindred musical journey. Both were trained in classical music yet found themselves irresistibly drawn to the raw, spirited essence of Nordic folk traditions. Their paths first crossed within this folk universe, an encounter that profoundly shaped their artistic vision. Today, their music elegantly merges the precision of classical sensibilities with the vibrant energy of folk—a blend that’s as tender as it is intense.
Their repertoire consists of original compositions that weave classical and Nordic folk influences, including a particular admiration for the lesser-known Danish composer Rued Langgaard. Dybfølt has embraced Langgaard’s music with passion, reimagining his works for cello and bass to explore new layers of their own sound. The result is a powerful, emotive musical language that speaks to the heart as much as it does to tradition.
